The Uruguayan government assured it will not support the re-election of Luis Almagro to the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS), whose management concludes in 2020, local media highlight on Saturday.

According to the newspaper Caras y Caretas, Tabare Vazquez’s administration deems Almagro ‘lost the conditions to perform his position.’

The FM, Rodolfo Nin Novoa, quoted by such journal said that Almagro disappointed the Uruguayan government and that he lost the ability to temper differences among countries.

Almagro, who was the FM of former President Jose Mujica (2010-2015) announced last December that he will be re-elected following the request of several countries, including Colombia and the United States.

During his current term he has been a point of criticism on several occasions for his attachment to the US desires and away from the real interests of the Latin American and Caribbean peoples.

Last February, the former President of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Timothy Harris, once again requested the Secretary General of the OAS to refrain from carrying out actions and statement outside the scope of his competence.

Almagro, in a tweet on February 7, suggested that in Dominica no free or fair elections will be held in 2020.

As for the crisis in Venezuela, CARICOM also sent a letter to Almagro, expressing its rejection of the decision to recognize MP Juan Guaido as ‘interim President’, taking attributions that do not correspond to him.

‘We are writing this letter to express our disapproval of the position that you, as Secretary General, have adopted in recognizing Juan Guaido as interim President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. This action, without the authorization of the OAS member countries, is considered inappropriate, CARICOM questions in the text.

The countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America, also whipped up Almagro’s attitude in such fact.
