Belo Horizonte, Brazil.- The president of the World Peace Council (WPC), Socorro Gomes, said she feels honored to participate in the 23rd Brazilian Convention of Solidarity with Cuba, which continues here today and pays special tribute to Fidel Castro.
Fidel has been an example and inspiration for many peoples; has been eternal as his humanism, expressed in its highest degree, Gomes told Prensa Latina shortly before the opening ceremony of the meeting last night, which gathers more than 200 participants from all regions of the country.
In times when feelings of hatred and intolerance are being fostered in the world, the thought of Fidel, who cultivated the highest humanist values, such as solidarity, peace, friendship and dignity, has been more effective than ever, she said.
Worthy of the Friendship Medal conferred by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, the activist stated that the figure of the historical leader of the Revolution is a ‘major reference’ for the World Peace Council.
She also recalled the substantial economic, social and human damages caused by more than 50 years of severe U.S. blockade; the innumerable terrorist actions of which he himself was a victim since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution and the permanent assassination attempts planned against Fidel Castro.
All the difficulties Cuba faced in the last decades have been, however, an opportunity to show the strength of his people, who united around the Commander-in-Chief in defense of the socialist homeland allowed a small country to become great, noble and full of many values, she said.
The gratitude to the permanent example of the Cuban Revolution and its historical leader, Fidel Castro, was the common denominator in the opening session yesterday of the 23rd Brazilian Convention of Solidarity with the island.
The 23rd Brazilian Convention of Solidarity with Cuba will be run until tomorrow in the Reference Center for Youth in this city, with the participation of about 200 delegates and guests of all Brazilian regions.
