The President of the Cuban Peace Movement, Silvio Platero reiterated here today that the US Guantánamo naval base is the only one installed in the world against the will of its people and government.

For this reason, Cuba is chosen to hold the International Peace Seminar and for the Abolition of Military Bases, the activist stated at a press conference on the 5th edition of that event, which will take place from May 4 to 6 in the east Province of Guantanamo.

So far, more than 200 delegates from 25 countries are expected to attend the meeting, whose aim is to join forces in the fight for the eradication of these military facilities, he said.

Platero also noted that, in addition to military bases as war forces and their negative incidents, other issues such as nuclear disarmament and denunciations of the interventionist policy of the big powers will be also debated at the meeting.

The president warned about the danger of increasing military bases in the world, and stated that the United States has 850 distributed in the five continents of the more than 1,000 existing.

He also pointed out that in order to establish its military power in other countries, ‘the empire uses supposed humanitarian assistance in national emergencies,’ as in the case of the recent floods in Piura, Peru.

The final declaration of the Seminar will be held in the town of Caimanera, just a few meters from the post of the base.
