El Salvador convened today an extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) for next week to analyze the current situation in Venezuela.

The Salvadoran government, pro-tempore president of CELAC, will host the meeting on May 2, at the request of the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Delcy Rodriguez, who appealed to her right to convene her counterparts in exceptional cases.

Rodríguez said that the purpose is to address ‘the threats against the constitutional democratic order in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, as well as the interventionist actions against its independence, sovereignty, and self-determination.’

According to the Established Procedures for the Organic Operation of CELAC, the foreign ministers shall meet regularly twice a year, ‘extraordinary meetings may be convened if necessary at the request of a Member State.’

The Salvadoran Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it would also support a similar meeting if convened by the Organization of American States (OAS), whose relationship with Venezuela is increasingly tight.

In fact, at the beginning of the month, the Secretary General of the OAS, tried to invoke the Inter-American Charter to expel Venezuela from the continental bloc, but it was met with rejection by several nations, including El Salvador.

Even so, Foreign Minister Rodriguez warned today that if the OAS holds such a meeting without Venezuela’s endorsement, the Bolivarian government would initiate procedures to withdraw from what was known as the ‘US’s Ministry of Colonies.’

For the time being, El Salvador ratified its commitment and support to all initiatives that promote dialogue to resolve the situation in Venezuela, where the wave of violence encouraged by the opposition right-wing has caused 26 deaths and great damage.
